This evening's presidential debate between candidates Senators Obama and McCain surpassed my excitement for the Play Offs. The state of our nation, as we remember it eight years ago, is at stake. I was glued to the television with my laptop.
The debate clearly defined the candidates’ positions; one as a forward thinker, the other mired in the past. McCain eloquently recited historical fact, previous administrations and his lengthy political past. Obama spoke to the future of this nation and the our place on the world stage. When our economy teeters on the brink of collapse from policies implemented by McCain and President Bush, he stills holds the party line that the economy will improve by further catering to big business. It was Bush’s administration that created the deregulated fiscal nightmare that threatens our nation economy. Obama has the common sense approach that when it is broken we must fix it. McCain’s deregulation policy and tax incentives for big business and the wealthy are how we arrived where we are today. I am ready for a change.
Obama is undoubtedly the intellectual amongst the two candidates; however not pompous or arrogant as many attributed to Gore. He is open to negotiation and forward thinking; McCain sadly remains a soldier from a bygone era of Busch politics. We have the choice of selecting a Diplomat or a Soldier.
I found McCain’s new mantra of “Senator Obama just does not understand” to be patronizing and condescending. Hopefully the public will not be duped by his Jedi trickery. Obama took the high road with his diplomatic style gave and credit where it was due. Whenever he found common ground he with McCain he did not hesitate to state his opponent was “right”.
I look forward to the Vice Presidential candidates debate next week after having watched Palin self destruct in her interview with Katie Couric. I am fascinated as to what she will do for a ninety minute debate. There is no way she can parrot the same party lines when she steps into the ring with Biden. After her performance next week I am sure Biden will catapult the ticket ahead by double digits.
